Good news for everyone from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and other countries on the exchange list: you don't need to take a driving test in Dubai. Your licence is simply exchanged, often on the same day if your documents are complete.
1. No test for Austria, Germany, Switzerland and other listed countries
The UAE has a list of countries whose driving licences can be exchanged without a test. Austria, Germany and Switzerland are on it, as are other countries. For countries not on the list, it means driving school, theory and practical training.
2. Visa and Emirates ID first, then the licence
You can only exchange your licence once your residence visa has been issued and you have your Emirates ID.
3. Cost: around AED 1,050
The eye test and the exchange together typically cost around AED 1,050, or about €260. The UAE licence is initially valid for two years, and for five years after renewal.
4. You keep your old licence
In practice, the traffic authority RTA does not keep European licences. You show yours and take it back with you. Online you will sometimes find different information, which in our experience is out of date. Our tip: make a copy beforehand, front and back.
5. Keep it safe for your return
If you move back to Europe at some point, you simply carry on driving with your old licence. If you only have a UAE licence, you may have to take a practical driving test, in Austria for example.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to take a driving test in Dubai?
No, if your licence is from Austria, Germany, Switzerland or another country on the exchange list.
Do I keep my Austrian, German or Swiss licence?
Yes, in practice you do. Afterwards you have both: the UAE licence for the UAE and your old one for Europe.
Can I drive with my own licence before that?
As a tourist, yes, with your national licence and an International Driving Permit. As soon as you live in Dubai, you need to switch to a UAE licence.
We take care of it with you
